Reviving the Dead

JUNE 22, 2147
INTERROGATION ROOM – UNION SUBDIVISION
Ethan Falko, Jessica Prentice, and Alexandra Salazar

“We need a medic! Now!” Jessica shouted.

Falko scowled. He grabbed Jessica’s bicep. “If she wakes up, make sure she gets us the information we need.”

Jessica met Falko’s gaze with a set of hard eyes brimming with anger. She pulled away from him as a medic rushed into the room. Glancing at Alexandra’s vital stats, the medic pulled an electric stimulation machine from his kit.

General Taylor and Jack appeared at the doorway. Falko crossed his arms and paced back to where they stood.

“Stand back!” the medic commanded.

He pressed two electric stim pads into Alexandra’s chest—just over her heart. Then, he set a clear plastic plate over Alexandra’s chest and flipped a switch. A hologram of her chest cavity appeared and hovered over the plastic plate. The three dimensional rendering of Alexandra’s heart was motionless.

The medic hit another button. Two lightening-like tentacles of energy appeared on the hologram as the electric stim pads fired. The medic directed the pinpoints of electricity to specific locations on Alexandra’s heart. Short, even pulses of energy stabbed at it, forcing it to contract at a regulated beat.

Seconds passed. Nothing. Alexandra’s lungs refused to kick in. Color drained from her face like water from a sieve. The medic increased the voltage. Violent spasms wracked the holographic image of Alexandra’s heart.

“Come on! Come on!” muttered the medic.

A cold, distressed silence fell over the room. Alexandra’s lifeless body twitched with grotesque finality.

Then, just as hope started to fade, Alexandra’s eyes exploded open as she gasped for breath.

“We need to get her to the medical station right away,” said the medic.

Jessica nodded and helped him prepare to move Alexandra.

Falko turned to Jack. “Suit up. As soon as she gives us a location you’re gone. We have to protect that ship, and we’re losing time.”
